Vegan Food in Buffalo
If you have searched vegan restaurants near me around Buffalo and turned up a lot of oatmeal, here is the short version: we are a diner with a real plant-based menu — six fully vegan dishes, bacon we make ourselves from seitan, and a vegan Benedict that has been on national television. Breakfast runs all day, until we close at 3pm.
The Veggs Benedict
Tofu scramble, house-made vegan seitan bacon, grilled tomato and spinach over a toasted baguette, under a cashew hollandaise we make from scratch. It is the dish people come in asking for by name, and it carries the Triple-D badge on our menu — a fully plant-based plate in a 1952 dining car, which is not how most people picture a Guy Fieri episode.
The hollandaise is the part that surprises people. Getting a cashew sauce to behave like hollandaise is genuinely difficult, and it is the reason this reads as breakfast rather than as a substitution.
The vegan menu, marked honestly
These are the dishes that are fully vegan as they come out of the kitchen. Anything vegetarian-but-not-vegan is listed separately below, because there is a difference and you should not have to find it out at the table.
We make the hard parts ourselves
The seitan bacon
Made in house, not bought frozen in a box. It is the backbone of the VLT and the Veggs Benedict, and it is the single thing most vegan guests mention on the way out.
The cashew hollandaise
From scratch. It is the difference between a Benedict and eggless toast with vegetables on it.
The white bean burger
Our own recipe, which is why it turns up in both the burger and the wrap. Beans and vegetables, not a frozen puck engineered to bleed.
The bread
Baked in house every morning, which matters more than it sounds when half the vegan menu is a sandwich.
3165 Main Street, and Main goes everywhere
We are in University Heights next to UB's South Campus. Main Street is the same road that runs through most of the northern suburbs, so for a lot of Western New York this is a straight line rather than a trip.
From Amherst — Snyder & Eggertsville
The closest. Main Street runs directly down from Snyder and Eggertsville with no highway at all — under ten minutes for most of it, which makes a weekday breakfast realistic rather than an outing.
From Williamsville
The same road the whole way. Williamsville, Snyder, Eggertsville and University Heights sit in a line on Main. Roughly fifteen minutes, and you never touch the 290.
From Kenmore & Tonawanda
Kenmore Avenue across to Main is the easy version — about ten minutes from Kenmore, a little more from Tonawanda.
From Cheektowaga & Depew
Off the Main Street line, so this is a real drive — Kensington to Bailey, then north. Fifteen to twenty minutes, and mornings run easier than weekend brunch hours.
From North Buffalo & Parkside
Hertel or Amherst Street across to Main puts you here in well under ten minutes. This is the crowd that walks in on a Wednesday.
Without a car
The Metro Rail runs the length of Main Street and stops within the block. There is also a lot on site, shared with The Steer next door.
Open early, closed Tuesdays
We serve 7am to 3pm, Wednesday through Monday. Breakfast does not stop at eleven — if you want the Veggs Benedict at 2:40pm, that is a normal order here.
Closed Tuesday, and closed by mid-afternoon every day. If you are after plant-based food in the evening, walk across the parking lot: The Steer's vegan menu runs until 10pm Tuesday through Saturday — including a lentil meatloaf that is a cousin of our bomber. Between the two kitchens there is somewhere plant-based to eat on this block every day of the week.

What people ask first
Is Lake Effect a vegan restaurant?
No. It is a 1952 diner that happens to take plant-based cooking seriously — house-made seitan bacon, a cashew hollandaise, our own white bean burger. If you want an all-vegan kitchen, Buffalo has good ones. If you want vegan breakfast at a table where someone else is ordering pancakes and sausage, that is us.
Can I get vegan breakfast in the afternoon?
Yes. Breakfast runs the entire time we are open, until 3pm. There is no cutoff and no separate lunch-only menu.
Are the milkshakes vegan?
No — the hand-dipped shakes are dairy. It is the one place people assume there is a plant-based version and there is not, so we would rather say it here than at the counter.
Do you take reservations?
We are a diner, so it is first come first served. Weekend mornings between 9 and 11 are the busy stretch — come earlier or later and you will walk in. Call ahead for to-go.
